Even before his birth the world events that came out of the the first World War
were shaping the the battle ground that Lio would later be fighting on to defend the country that would be the home we have
today.
Heliodoro V. Martinez was born at 5:30 a.m. on July 1, 1921 in Mverick
County to Catarino Gonzalez Martinez (25) and his wife Maria del Refugio Vasquez
Martinez (28) at their home at the Lamar Coal Mines Reservation near Eagle Pass, in Maverick County, Texas.
For the farmer and house wife Heliodoro was their second child.

Once the Lamar Mine closed in February 1925, Catarino moved the family to Gallup, NM. Lio was now 4 years old and the family size was three children as younger sister Ofelia was now born. Lio's
uncle Victor Martinez went with his brother's family to New Mexico.
July 1, 1939 Lio's 18th Birthday
July 1, 1942 Lio celebrates his 21st birthday and the U.S Draft Bill now affects
him.
July 28, 1942 Lio gets a postcard from Selective Service (noted as D.S.S. Form No.
201) reading: "NOTICE TO REGISTRANT TO APPEAR FOR PHYSICAL EXAMINATION - You are hereby directe to report
to Dr. Hershall LaForge at Uvalde, Texas for physical examination at 11 a.m. on August 3. 1942. Failure to do so is
an act punishable by imprisonment and fine, and may also result in your losing valuable rights and in your immediate induction
military service." signed by Member of Local Board.
