Lio and Moraima Martinez's Family...
Heliodoro V. Martinez was born at 5:30 a.m. on July
1, 1921 in Mverick County to Catarino Gonzalez Martinez (25) and his wife Maria del
Refugio Vasquez Martinez (28) at their home at the Lamar Coal Mines Reservation near Eagle Pass, in Maverick
County, Texas. For the farmer and house wife Heliodoro was their second child (click here to see family of Catarino & Maria). Heliodoro, Lio for short, was at the mailing address of P. O . Box 31
Blewett, Texas.

Moraima Rodriguez Fuentes was born on May 1, 1925 to Efrain
Gonzalez Fuentes and Tomasita Rodriguez Fuentes in Crystal City, TX.
Lio and Moraima met in Eagle Pass, Texas. But the 1940's had more
than just swing dancing and televison, the brink of war loomed. On December 4, 1942, Lio was drafted to serve in the
ARMY during World War II. From basic training at Ft. Bliss in El Paso, TX, he went to Camp Kilmer, New Jersey. While here Lio got to visit New York City. He remembers seeing St. Patrick's Cathedral and
other landmarks.
The site seeing was short lived and he boarded a boat to Europe where
Corporal Martinez served Btry D - 459 to AAA AW BN assigned as anti-aircraft - Bofars. All through his service
he kept a picture of Moraima in his fold, which only till July 2002 was he able to remove to scan a copy. The two
wrote. Lio decided if God saw him through the war he would marry Moraima (good idea grandpa because now we are
all here).

Every bride has a horror story about their wedding day and Moraima
(grandma) has hers too. They decided on May 4th, just three days after her birthday, because her family would be leaving
back to Minnesota to work. So the wedding was set for 8 a.m. but when the bride and the small wedding party started
to gather they were greeted by a coffin. The church needed to squeeze in a funeral and the wedding would need to be
delayed an hour. But it helped out the family members who were running late to make the event. And like all wedding
horror stories it had a great ending... US!
The couple lived in the Blewett mining town. Lio recalls that when the first child arrived the nearest doctor was in Uvalde 18 miles away. Only the
Company Manager had a phone in his home. So at 2 or 3 in the morning Lio woke him to use his phone to call the doctor
to deliver the first of several children.
