The family of Mr. and Mrs. Catarino G. Martinez...

Catarino Martinez was born May 1st, 1897 in Mexico to Fernando Rodriguez Martinez and Romanita Gonzalez Martinez.  Refugia Vasquez was born August 11, 1894 in Guerrero, Coah., Mexico to Eulogio and Refugio Morales Vasquez.  They met (enter). Catarino and Refugia Martinez were married on January. 18, 1919.

Once the Lamar Mine closed in February 1925, Catarino moved the family to Gallup, NM. The family had grown to three children - Arnulfo 6, Lio 4 and now joining was young sister Fila 2. Lio's uncle Victor Martinez went with his brother's family to New Mexico.

The two Martinez brother fround work in the coal mines in Gallup. The family rented a home. Lio recalls the house was not bigg maybe two bedrroms and a kitchen. There was no indoor plumbing so an outhouse and a tub brought into the kitchen served as a bathroom.

First memory: The Indian - (maybe 1925) "I can still visualize the event because it scared the heck out of me. It was in Gallup, New Mexico, a group of kids from ages 4 to about 6 were playing on a road that sloped down on each side. We had a cardboard box and we were taking turns on getting in the box while the other kid would hold it and let it go. At that time it was my turn to take a ride and I was in the box, this wagon with an Indian stopped real close while I was in the box. I went down the slop and when the box stopped I jumped out and ran home crying to mama. That really scared the heck out of me." - H.V. Martinez 07/21/2001

The Martinez family lived in Gallup for one year and then returned to Eagle Pass, Texas moving in with Lio’s grandfather, Fernando Rodriguez Martinez. They had all moved back to Texas and had not been able to save much. The trip took some money. Lio recalls stopping on the trip to eat a can of sardines and bread. Hey, when you’re hungry you’ll eat anything.

Not long after their return to Eagle Pass, Catarino fell ill. He had developed an infection on the lower part of his leg. He joked with the children that the infection was a war wound. The family lived with Catarino and Victor’s father for less than a year.

Settling Into Uvalde 1926 Catarino, in 1926, heard of work with the Uvalde Rock Asphalt Co., Uvalde Mines. The mines were 18 miles west of Uvalde. Previously, called Cline Mines, then Blewett for postal delivery.

The family moved around Christmas from Fernando’s home to a tent that Catarino set up at Uvalde Rock Asphalt mine number one (1).

Compiled & Edited: Roberto R. Calderon

In 1983, Roberto R. Calderon wrote an anthology titled South Texas Coal Mining: A Community History on Eagle Pass.  He interviewed Catartino and Maria July 21, 1983.  In that anthology he published a speech by C. G. Martinez titled "Cinco De Mayo en la Mina Lamar: Dos Declamaciones" (Calderon 52).  As great-grandpa spoke Spanish primarily, the text is in Spanish. I will ask my grandpa/Lio to translate and add some excerpts here when that is done.
