Just weeks after his 22nd birthday Heliodoro, received a post card from Selective Service dated July 28, 1942 reading "NOTICE TO REGISTRANT TO APPEAR FOR PHYSICAL EXAMINATION".  "You are hereby directed to report to Dr. Hershall LaForge at Uvalde, TX for physical examination at 11 a.m., on August 3, 1942.  Failure to do so is an act punishable by imprisonment and fine and may also result in your losing valuable rights in you immediate induction into military service" Signurture of Member of Local Board (D.S.S. Form No. 201).
 
On October 15, 1942 another post card from Selective Service came for another physical examination for a blood test recheck. (D.S.S. Form 201 revised 4-1-42)
 
A third post card marked November 17, 1942 from Selective Service read:
     "Reminding you of your Order to Report for Induction ordering you to report November 26, 1942 at 4:00 p.m. an to notify you that if you are accepted by the Armed Forces, you now get only seven days furlough."  - UVALDE COUNTY LOCAL BOARD / Clerk (D.S.S. Form 352)
 
On November 26, 1942, Lio was drafted to server in World War II and began active service on December 4, 1942  From basic training at Fort Bliss in El Paso, TX he went to Camp Kilmer in New Jersey where he was able to visit New York City.
 
The site seeing was short lived and he boarded a boat to Europe where Corporal Martinez served Btry D - 459 to AAA AW BN assigned as anti-aircraft - Bofars.  He served till December 6, 1945.
